Surveillance & Children and their Information

There could be many positive and negative aspects to having webcams situated in a daycare. On one hand, if my life goes completely as planned and I get married and have a happy healthy family then for me a webcam in the daycare that I chose to send my children would be fantastic. I am sure it is a positive aspect for many happy healthy families. I know myself, I will have all of Mazlow’s physiological needs. I need to know my child is safe and I will also need to know that my child is getting lots of attention and care. I would also love to be able to see my child whenever I want. I think seeing her and what she does and how she progresses throughout the day would help me become much closer to her. I could extend learning she is doing at the daycare into my own home. Although webcams seem like a fabulous idea to a happy healthy family they may not seem like a great idea to a family who has been separated. There could be several different reasons why children could be unsafe being exposed on the internet. An abusive father, alcoholic mother or even a child molesting uncle could have access to viewing these children on a daily basis. I personally don’t think I would like the idea that I would not know who was viewing my child at all times of the day. I have similar feelings about having camera’s in a swimming pool although it was amazing that the technology saved the young child from drowning. I still do not feel comfortable having children exposed to a camera that is looked at by a variety of people especially not knowing who is looking at them at any one time. Technology always offers so many helpful resources especially new ways of doing things faster and easier however if everyone using the technology resources are not fully trained and using the technology improperly and not for the right purposes it can be very dangerous.

never really thought about the positive reasons .........

i like the positive outcomes youve listed that can come out of having a camera in a day care. i am sure that i too would like to be able to see my child's development whne she is away from me. it must be difficult for working parents to leave their infants and toddlers at the day care centres and hear that they have missed significant achievements. imagine being told that your child frist learned to walk at the centre and that they somehow had it on tape. i think i would be ecstatic.

but i guess , like youve implied, the problem arises when parents naively trust and abuse this technology. i hope that wiht some education and more security measures, parents who have genuine and noble reasons of chosing day cares centres with cameras will be able to do so with out feeling like they have placed themselves and their child in an compromising position.
